Things You Do In China #7: Chinese Photo Poses

Things you do in China #7: Chinese Photo Poses

China is a crazy place, I’m not going to lie. However, I wouldn’t have spent over 21 months here now if I didn’t like it. There are little quirks, just like any country, which will help you to fit in better. I hope to cover some of these in this series of topics!
#7 You adopt the standard of all Chinese photo poses for EVERY photo

I don’t know how it happened, it just did. I have gone from having photos like this of me:

Big Goose Pagoda Xi’an

To having photos of me like this:

In Ordos…

And this:

And this:

And this:

They say living in places for extended periods of time you adopt the local habits. Thankfully I’ve not adopted the spitting on the floor and littering habits, however Chinese photo poses will forever and a day be in my repertoire now. I never really had a personal pose before this, which is maybe why I adopted it whilst living here. But I think I might need to change it soon.

Anyone have any ideas for my new signature pose?!

  1. Always good to have some variety in photos rather than a boring pose, they are much more fun to look at that way. Maybe next you should try pulling funny faces?

    • I’ve always been told “love the camera” and you’ll get good photos…I’m still not convinced!

  2. I found myself doing that so much more since moving to Korea! But Korea also has other cutesy poses so you can change it up from time to time.

    • Great you have other poses you can mix it up with. The only other option for Chinese poses is to find the worst background ever for a photo, or a tonne of self taken ones – not my style!

      • haha Selfies are REALLY popular here, too! What part of China do you live in? I’d love to visit China, but getting a visa is a bit of a hassle. Have you ever considered visiting Korea?

        • Haha! Very similar it seems! I live in the south of China, in Fujian province which is across from Taiwan. Where are you in Korea? I have had a lot of friends go there so maybe I should put it on my to-to-list! Where are you and how long will you be there for?
