Things You Do In China #5: Chopsticks

Things you do in China: #5

China is a crazy place, I’m not going to lie. However, I wouldn’t have spent over 19 months here now if I didn’t like it. There are little quirks, just like any country, which will help you to fit in better. I hope to cover some of these in this series of topics!
#5 You learn to have a loving relationship with chopsticks, otherwise you don’t eat

There’s no getting around it. You will meet chopsticks during your time in China. For the first few weeks it does take a bit of getting used to, and when you go out for a meal you will always get food put onto your plate by Chinese colleagues. I returned this favour by performing this task for Beka when she visited me in Beijing! 😉

Of course, there are many things that I still have trouble with, noodles, for example and eggs unless you spear them with the chopsticks themselves and eat them like a lolly…

I have become a little bit of a chopstick connousier – I know that wooden ones are much easier to grab food with than plastic ones. God help you if you are eating hotpot with plastic chopsticks!

So, love them or hate them, you must remember that chopsticks will be a staple part of your life in China, although if you’re really hopeless, you can usually find a spoon is available too…

Have you ever used chopsticks? How easy/difficult do you find them?

  1. That reminds me of my first day in China. I grabbed some chopsticks and didn’t know how to use them. All Chinese were LOLing :). Now I’m like a pro. Great story Sarah!
