Just round the corner: Orere Point
I’ve written and shown pictures on here before about Kawakawa Bay, a beach we regularly take Sasha to for walks. We also have another beach we use, Orere Point.
Where: 28km from Clevedon, 11km from Kawakawa Bay, 68km from Auckland
Best for: Walking the dog, finding mussels
Famous for: Orere Point Top 10 Holiday Park….and that’s about it!
Unlike Kawakawa and its cockle shells strewn across the beach, Orere is sandy and therefore a little easier underfoot if you fancy going barefoot.
There are a lot of trees overhanging on the beach; mostly they are Pohutekawa trees, the New Zealand Christmas tree, which flower red during December and January, however this year they haven’t been quite so prominent.
As you can see, there are gloomy days during a New Zealand summer, however for these photos it didn’t really matter at all.
At the far end from where you park your car, there are, however, a lot of rocks, so you’d need sturdy footwear to clamber over them! One of my favourite childhood pastimes was rock-pooling, and although I don’t generally have a net in my hands these days, I still like to look into the pools to see what I can spot!
It’s nice to just spend some time sitting on the rocks, Sasha also likes to take a breather.
