In which I pay homage to my bar visits and friends over the past few months
Over the past couple of months we’d been quite regular in our trips to Muse Bar. We enjoyed the atmosphere, and grew to know many of the people who worked there, including the bar staff, the bar manager and the band, who were from the Philippines. Jim, Aila, Jona, Dingdong and also Noel for a short while, began sets every hour with the last one at 1am. After this they’d usually head out for some food, and we’d join them. It was a great little night noodles stand, which I swear to God had the best soup I’ve ever tasted in China. Boy I’m going to miss that soup.
As you can see we had a lot of fun.
What was also great about these guys was that they were really friendly and more than happy to cook some amazing Filipino food for us, most recently as a “surprise party” for me, although everyone was telling me a different story that day:
Paul: “We’re going out for lunch with Maggie and Alfred.”
Darren (via text): “Jim has broken his leg!! He and Aila have just got back from the hospital, we should go and see him!”
Me (to Paul): Did you hear Jim’s broken his leg??!!
Paul: “I’m sure he’ll be ok.”
It was a lovely thing nonetheless and thanks to all of them for arranging it, and Flynn for cooking all the meat in the 35+ degree heat on the BBQ! And potato salad, wow, THE BEST potato salad I’ve ever had.
We had great fun playing UNO and generally just mucking around. For an afternoon where we drank no alcohol or did anything silly, we sure as hell laughed a lot!
This is perhaps my favourite video of my last few weeks in Zhangzhou, as I can see and hear many of the people I got to know so well.
