Kawakawa Bay ~ New Zealand Beach Files

In which I introduce you to Kawakawa Bay

What a stunner!

The beach itself isn’t so popular for sunbathers because it’s almost entirely made up of cockle shells; you are actually allowed to pick 50 cockles per person, per day here. kawakawa bay

Obligatory foot shot too: kawakawa bay

We often walk Sasha here because dogs are allowed, which is quite rare on a beach in New Zealand during the height of summer. Sasha loves the gorgeously blue water!

Sarah, Sasha and I often grottle around Kawakawa, picking up lots of shells, which Sarah loves! We try to get here at a lower tide because we can then walk further around the bay.

We also tend to find a lot of random other things on the beach, as well as the shells that Sarah loves. She once saw an octopus, whilst another day we say these rays all washed up and dried up (although we smelt them before we saw them!)

We love Kawakawa as it’s only 10 minutes or so from the kennels, so we can go during the middle of the day when we don’t have any doggie duties. There’s a boat ramp at one end which gets very busy during holiday time because the bay is a short distance to the Coromandel Peninusla and also Waiheke Island, in a boat of course!

Who fancies coming to Kawakawa Bay for a walk?
